Burdick, Eugene: THE NINTH WAVE, Dell, 1957, $.50.
A man discovers the secret behind selfish human behavior and uses it
to build a political career. A frightening and prophetic novel.
Clavell, James: SHOGUN, Dell, 1975, ISBN 0-440-17800-2, $3.50.
English sailor shipwrecked in 17th Century Feudal Japan. Epic historic
tale of power and intrigue.
Also, don't miss Clavell's first book, and maybe his best, KING RAT.
Dickens, Charles. <Nothing worth listing. A highly overrated writer.>
Dumas, Alexander: THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO
One of the best revenge stories ever written.
Durrell, Lawrence: THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET
The story of a man's love, from different perspectives. Superb.
Feuchtwanger, Lion: DER JÜDISCHE KRIEG [THE JEWISH WAR]
The story of Flavius Josephus and the Jewish uprising against the Romans
in the First Century.
Goethe: FAUST, Deutsche Taschenbuch Verlag, 1972 printing,

Heroic tale of battle and love in the Spanish Civil War.

Good and Evil and the meaning of Free Will in a fine and readable
story.
Stendhal: SCARLET AND BLACK, Penguin Books, 1953, $2.95.
Social climbing, intrigue, romance in 1830's France. Marvelous
portrayal of societal life and gripping story.
Trevanian: SHIBUMI, Ballantine Books, 1980, ISBN 0-345-28585-9, $2.95.
On the most superficial level a well-crafted espionage novel, but
actually a spoof of the entire genre and superb example of how to
flesh out characters. Funny and enjoyable.
Twain, Mark: LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI, Bantam, 1963 edition, $.50.
One of the lesser known Twain books, but one of the best. Retelling
of his learning to be a river pilot as a youth.
Werfel, Franz: THE FORTY DAYS OF MUSA DAGH, {Translated from the
German},Viking, 1934 [Cardinal, 1961, paperback reissue, $0.75], <out of
print>.
Fictionalization of the heroic struggle of Armenian villagers facing
annihilation in 1915. An inspiring story well told that has ironic and
tragic parallels to the Holocaust of the Jews only a couple of decades
later. Werfel's warning fell on deaf ears in 1933.

$2.50.
The coming of age of an aspiring actress in the Manhattan of the 1930's.
A grand morality tale.
